Intriguing Wreck near Mellieha Bay
MV Pippo was built in 1976 at the Malta yard as an 18-meter vessel with a concrete hull. Originally a research vessel, it was later converted into a fishing and transport boat by its new owner. Its primary purpose was to provide support for tuna farms. Unfortunately, in October 2004, while returning from Comino with a cargo of fish, it began to take on water and eventually sank. The wreck now lies upright on the sandy bottom, approximately 35 meters deep near Mellieha Bay.
Despite its small size, the MV Pippo remains an intriguing wreck, remarkably well-preserved. It serves as a captivating subject for underwater photography, showcasing its intact equipment. The wreck is also home to a variety of marine life, including large groupers, damselfish, crabs, and shrimp.
