MV Karwela

Xatt l-Ahmar, situated in the south of Gozo, is renowned as one of the most famous diving destinations on the island, attracting divers from far and wide. This picturesque location serves as a compelling reason to explore the natural wonders of Gozo. At Xatt l-Ahmar, three remarkable wrecks stand as the highlight of this site, captivating the imagination of divers.

MV Karwela, positioned just 50 meters west of MV Cominoland, takes center stage. Originally a passenger ferry constructed in 1957, this impressive wreck spans a length of 50 meters and a width of 8 meters. It found its resting place on the seabed in 2006, mirroring the fate of its predecessor. Descending to a depth of approximately 42 meters, we encounter the wreck right at our entry point.

As we embark on our underwater adventure, I recommend experienced divers to explore beneath the deck, accessible via a wide staircase. The intricate passageways and hidden corners offer a thrilling experience for those with a higher skill level. For less experienced divers, I encourage you to explore the upper deck and bridge area, providing an equally captivating glimpse into the history of the vessel.

After a few minutes of immersive exploration, it’s advisable to swim towards the shore, always mindful of your depth limits and adhering to your planned dive time. Remember, safety should always be a priority. Xatt l-Ahmar, with its alluring wrecks and enchanting underwater scenery, promises an unforgettable diving experience for all who venture into its depths.
