French Passenger Ship

Le Polynesien is a French passenger ship with a length of 152 metres built on 18.04.1890. It sailed on the route between France and Australia. It took 252 passengers on board. On 10.08.1918, it was torpedoed by an U-Boot UC22 approx. 7 miles east of Grand Harbour. It is leaning to the left side at a depth of 53 to 70 metres. The bow is well preserved. Here we can see the anchor as well as the tires and tubes in the hold. The torpedo struck in the midship, where the engine room was located, and it caused considerable damage to the structure. In contrast, stern with the gun and the propeller is in very good condition. Below deck, in the passenger part, we can find bed frames, bathtubs, lamps. Strong currents occurring here make diving at Le Polynesien targeted only to experienced divers. This is one of the key points on the wreck map of Malta, which must be visited at least once.
